Chelsea's Big Fall Shows Open a Week Before Art Week NYC

What does a four-day art festival add to a neighborhood where the art is already on the walls when the festival starts?

Art Week NYC runs November 11 through 14. Artforum and ARTnews announced it in June as the first edition of a citywide gallery week, with openings, walkthroughs, talks and neighborhood tours. Chelsea's largest galleries aren't waiting for it. Their fall exhibitions open between November 4 and 6. That leaves about a week when the new shows are up and the festival hasn't started yet. For anyone who lives within walking distance of West 20th through West 26th Streets, that week is the best time to see them.

The Art Goes Up First

Look at the opening dates the galleries have posted. The pattern is easy to see.

Gallery Exhibition Opens Closes
Berry Campbell, 524 West 26th Street Elaine de Kooning October 29 December 19
Lisson Gallery Yu Hong November 4 January 9, 2027
David Zwirner, 19th and 20th Street galleries Yoshitomo Nara November 5 December 12
Gladstone, 515 West 24th Street Robert H. Colescott, Cairo November 5 December 19
Pace, 540 West 25th Street Li Hei Di, the year of mud November 6 December 19
Pace, 540 West 25th Street Lucas Samaras, Boxes and Reconstructions November 6 January 23, 2027
Pace, 510 West 25th Street Elmgreen & Dragset, TRANSITION November 6 January 16, 2027
Luhring Augustine, 531 West 24th Street Jason Moran, STACKS November 6 December 19

Gagosian already has its main fall show up. Brice Marden's I Am Plane Image has been at 522 West 21st Street since September 15 and runs through December 12.

Count it up. Pace alone opens three exhibitions on one day across two buildings on West 25th Street. Zwirner splits Nara across two of its addresses, including 537 West 20th Street. By the morning of Saturday, November 7, the blocks between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues will have a completely new set of shows. Art Week begins the following Wednesday.

What the Festival Actually Brings

Art Week brings programming around the shows and a schedule that pulls visitors from across the city into one window. According to the PMC announcement, the format includes:

  • three days of gallery openings and activations, organized by neighborhood
  • a full day of public programming hosted jointly by the New Museum and Artforum
  • gallery tours led by ARTnews editors in each neighborhood
  • a hub in Midtown programmed by ARTnews and Art in America, with sponsor activations and conversations

Chelsea is the largest of the four areas. Art Week's own neighborhood index lists 43 venues in Chelsea. In August, Artforum reported 76 participating galleries across Chelsea, Tribeca, the Lower East Side and the Upper East Side. It named Hauser & Wirth, Gagosian, David Zwirner, Pace, Lisson and Paula Cooper Gallery among them. The festival's homepage gives a lower number, 70 galleries, for the gallery program.

Artforum publisher Danielle McConnell explained the focus in that August announcement: "Our vision for Art Week NYC began with the galleries."

The details residents would want most hadn't been published as of mid-October. That means which day Chelsea gets its coordinated openings, what time the editor-led walks start, and which events need tickets. The Chelsea page on the Art Week site only offered an early-access sign-up for the full schedule and ticket releases. Until the schedule comes out, the only firm Chelsea dates for November are the galleries' own opening dates.

The Same Week, Uptown

Chelsea won't have mid-November to itself. The ADAA Fair takes over the Park Avenue Armory from November 13 to 16, with a Preview Gala on November 12. Art Week has announced cross-promotion with the fair. Artsy's fall guide describes the November sales at Christie's, Sotheby's and Phillips as the fall's biggest auction moment and says the ADAA Fair is timed to that auction week.

Put the three together and the same collectors, advisors and out-of-town visitors will be in the city at once. Their schedule pushes them through Chelsea, the Upper East Side and Midtown in the same few days. Chelsea's openings the week before happen ahead of that rush. The festival week happens in the middle of it.

A Calendar for the Gap

Here's the sequence on one page, for anyone who wants both the quiet viewing and the festival.

  1. Thursday, October 29. Berry Campbell opens Elaine de Kooning with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. at 524 West 26th Street.
  2. Saturday, October 31. Berry Campbell hosts a lecture on the de Kooning exhibition.
  3. Wednesday, November 4. Lisson's Yu Hong exhibition opens. It runs into January.
  4. Thursday, November 5. Yoshitomo Nara opens at Zwirner, and Robert H. Colescott's Cairo opens at Gladstone on West 24th Street.
  5. Friday, November 6. Pace opens Li Hei Di, Lucas Samaras, and Elmgreen & Dragset. Luhring Augustine opens Jason Moran's STACKS at 531 West 24th Street.
  6. Saturday, November 7, through Tuesday, November 10. Every show in the table above is up, and Art Week hasn't started.
  7. Wednesday, November 11, through Saturday, November 14. Art Week NYC, with the ADAA Fair overlapping uptown from November 13.

The weekend of November 7 and 8 plus the two weekdays after it make up the clearest stretch of the season. Every new show is on view, and the festival programming hasn't begun.

What Opens During the Week, and What Outlasts It

Not every Chelsea opening comes early. At 555 West 25th Street, Gallery Henoch opens Eric Zener's Liminal Spaces on November 12, during the festival, and keeps it up through December 5. The same building also has a new arrival. Galerie Emmanuelle Grelier opened its new Chelsea space there with "What Holds Us," an exhibition of Beatriz Guzman Catena and Laurence Perratzi that runs through November 26. So a stop at 555 West 25th during Art Week covers one show that just opened and one that's been up for weeks.

The longer run dates matter just as much. Most of the large shows stay up well after the festival leaves:

  • Marden at Gagosian and Nara at Zwirner both run through Saturday, December 12.
  • Colescott at Gladstone, Moran at Luhring Augustine, Li Hei Di at Pace and de Kooning at Berry Campbell all run through December 19.
  • Yu Hong at Lisson, Elmgreen & Dragset at Pace and Samaras at Pace run into January 2027.

Berry Campbell also has a panel discussion on Thursday, November 19, the week after the festival.

So Art Week's four days sit inside a much longer season, with quieter weeks on both sides. You can see the shows in the open week before the festival, come back for the editor-led walks once the schedule is out, and still have most of December to return to the rooms you want to see again.

For collectors buying on West 25th Street in November, the gallery calendar also decides which apartment walls need to be ready and when. If a new acquisition, a pied-à-terre or a move is in the works this season, Frances Katzen and The Katzen Team can line up the timing. Get in Touch.
